60 students from Richmond Heights Middle and Eugenia E. Thomas Middle took on Hurricane Jaime at the Miami-Dade County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security on October 30, 2007. The storm, which grew to a category 3, destroyed bridges and caused severe flooding, testing the students’ ability to save lives and restore order. They came through with flying colors!

Moving 100 senior citizens from a stranded nursing home to safety was one of several challenges that 50 students from Forest Glenn and Sunrise Middle Schools faced as they planned for and recovered from Hurricane Jason at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center on November 5, 2007. At the final press conference, the student mayor answered questions of the student reporters, explaining their various responsibilities. “No lives lost,” he joyously exclaimed.

When Category 3 Zack slammed into the city being managed by Don Estridge High Tech Middle School, all 30 students suddenly realized the destructive nature of such a powerful storm. The students prepared for and recovered from Zack at a November 14, 2007 simulation conducted at the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center. Among their problem-solving tasks – relocating 1,000 citizens from a shelter caught on fire; a destroyed trailer park needs to be searched for survivors immediately; and fuel for transporting food and water has run dry. Working as a team, the students got the job done.
